How to Answer a Summons
TO PLEAD GUILTY:
By Mail:
You may plead guilty by mail to any violation without appearing in court. To do so, fill out “PART A” on the back of the summons and mail it to:
TOWN OF CHESTER COURT
1786 KINGS HIGHWAY
CHESTER, NY 10918
This must be done prior to the court date listed on the front of the ticket. The court will notify you of the penalty.
In Person:
If you are going to plead guilty, it is recommended you do so by mail. If you do, however, want to plead in person, you may appear in Town Court, which is held at 1786 Kings Highway at the date and time specified on the bottom of your summons.
If you are charged with a misdemeanor or felony, you may not plea by mail.
TO PLEAD NOT GUILTY:
You may plead not guilty by mail by filling out “PART B” on the back of your summons and mail it to:
TOWN OF CHESTER COURT
1786 KINGS HIGHWAY
CHESTER, NY 10918
This must be done within 48 hours of the date of the violation. You will be notified by the court of the trial date.
You may also appear in person at your scheduled court appearance and plead not guilty and a trial date will be scheduled by the court.
If you have questions, you may call the Town of Chester Court at (845) 469-9541 during regular business hours, or the Town of Chester Police at (845) 469-4562.
Certain equipment violations are eligible for dismissal if they are corrected by sundown the following business day.
